What are the most common side effects?
The most common side effects associated with GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medications include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Stomach discomfort
- Fatigue
These side effects are typically mild and improve over time. Clinical trials show that less than 5% of people discontinue these medications due to side effects.
What counts as mild or moderate side effects?
Mild or moderate side effects are usually symptoms like mild nausea or a minor headache that don't stop you from going about your day and often improve over time. These are normal as your body adjusts to the medication.
Are there serious side effects I should watch for?
Yes. If you experience any of the following, stop taking your medication immediately and seek urgent medical attention:
Severe, persistent stomach pain - particularly if it:
- Is so intense (8/10 or higher) that you can't focus on anything else
- Makes it nearly impossible to handle normal daily tasks
- Doesn't improve with over-the-counter pain relief or rest
- Radiates to your back or underneath your right ribcage or shoulder
- Is accompanied by severe vomiting (3+ times daily, or vomit containing blood or appearing like coffee grounds)
These symptoms could indicate pancreatitis, a serious condition requiring urgent medical attention.
Difficulty breathing, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
These could be signs of a severe allergic reaction, which can be life-threatening.
Severe pain underneath your right ribcage that may spread to your shoulder or back, particularly if accompanied by vomiting, high temperature, or rapid heartbeat
These symptoms could suggest acute gallbladder problems.
If you experience any of these symptoms, call emergency services (911) or go to the nearest emergency department immediately.
I notice a lump at my injection site - is this normal?
Small lumps at the injection site can occasionally occur. However, if a lump persists, worsens, or becomes painful, please contact your healthcare provider.
